Common causes include expired subscriptions, keys tied to a different Microsoft account, or keys blocked after a compliance audit. Office activation is account-linked for Microsoft 365 and key-linked for perpetual versions.

How to Fix It

  1. Open any Office app → File → Account → check activation status and sign-in.
  2. For Microsoft 365, confirm your subscription is active at account.microsoft.com.
  3. For perpetual Office, run: cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16" then cscript ospp.vbs /act
  4. Remove old licenses: cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus then /unpkey:LAST5CHARS
